Many low-income people are forced to make a choice between paying the rent or buying food when they can’t afford both. Providing food to social service agencies allows low-income families and individuals to avoid homelessness and enables them to reach economic independence. There are around 2,000 babies and toddlers from low-income families on the Westside of Los Angeles that do not have access to adequate nutrition. This has led to Westside Food Bank providing packaged food, canned food and baby food to vulnerable families.
Babies and toddlers need proper nutrition to provide all the necessary minerals, nutrients and protein for the brain and body to grow and develop. Baby food supports this vital stage of growth and development. Studies have shown that bad diets in children have led to nutrient deficiencies, creating learning and development problems and leading to low achievement in school, emotional problems and poor health.

Westside Food Bank is an independent non-profit corporation which provides food to social service agencies on the Westside of Los Angeles County. Our food often enables low-income people to stay in their homes, deterring the problem of homelessness, because it saves them from having to make the agonizing choice between paying for rent or food when they can’t afford both. Receiving our food also enables our 70 member-agencies to devote more of their own resources to other ways of helping clients achieve self respect and economic independence.
