In the United States, there are over 550,000 homeless people who face daily challenges with food, shelter and hygiene. While there are many organisations in the United States that provide meals and housing to the homeless, finding solutions to hygiene has often been unrecognised and overlooked. However, Lava Mae has undertaken the hygiene challenge by providing free weekly shower services to the homeless in the state of California.
Many homeless people go days, weeks and even months without taking a shower because they don’t have access to soap or running water. Therefore, they are most at risk for developing and spreading illness. Providing shower services improves the health and wellbeing of people experiencing homelessness and allows them to feel like themselves again. Access to showers and toilets are a basic human right.

Through our open source toolkits, in-depth training and strategic partnerships, Lava Maeˣ is building a worldwide network of providers who take critical services for our unhoused neighbors to the street. To date, we’ve inspired, advised or trained 170 programs in 155 communities worldwide to create mobile hygiene services modeled after ours, and provided over 78,000 showers to the homeless.
