Description

In the United States, there are over 550,000 homeless people who face daily challenges with food, shelter and hygiene. While there are many organisations in the United States that provide meals and housing to the homeless, finding solutions to hygiene has often been unrecognised and overlooked. However, Lava Mae has undertaken the hygiene challenge by providing free weekly shower services to the homeless in the state of California.

Importance

Many homeless people go days, weeks and even months without taking a shower because they don’t have access to soap or running water. Therefore, they are most at risk for developing and spreading illness. Providing shower services improves the health and wellbeing of people experiencing homelessness and allows them to feel like themselves again. Access to showers and toilets are a basic human right.

Facts & Stats

The showers are 15 minutes, single stall, cleaned after every use and open for everyone
Someone in Los Angeles earning minimum wage would need to work 79 hours a week to be able to afford a one-bedroom apartment
The homeless have higher rates of illness and, on average, die 12 years before the United States’ general population
