On Friday September 21 2018, Ottawa-Gatineau was badly affected by two tornadoes, reaching speeds of up to 265 km/h. Many trees were uprooted and around 1,000 properties were damaged, leaving 200,000 residents without power. #OperationReLeaf - Ottawa-Gatineau provides funding to homeowners and land owners to replace trees uprooted by the tornadoes. For more than twenty five years, Tree Canada has engaged communities, governments, corporations, and individuals in the pursuit of a greener and healthier living environment for Canadians. They provide Canadians with education, technical expertise, and the resources to plant and care for urban and rural trees. They’ve planted more than 82 million trees and greened more than 660 schoolyards and 1,100 urban areas across the country.

Maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity is essential for Earth and all living things. With many urban trees uprooted, less carbon is being sequestered from the atmosphere. Urban forests absorb air pollution from the atmosphere and lower the air temperature, making cities more inhabitable for both humans and animals. They provide shelter and food to animals and insects, increasing plant and animal biodiversity. Research has also shown that urban forests play a big role in human psychology. Green communities lead to lower heart rates, lower blood pressure and lower stress levels, and elevate people’s mental health.
