In the United States, the average child spends less than three years playing a sport and quits by the age of 11. Most children continuing after that age are from high-income families. Disadvantaged children are likely forced to quit a sport because of insufficient funds. Not being able to play sports in a group has many consequences on children both physically and mentally. By providing underprivileged children with tennis lessons and equipment they learn to work as a team to reach common goals, which in turn, help children develop communication skills, problem-solving skills, and gives them the opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle.
Children from low-income families are 6 times more likely to quit sports due to high costs. These children feel less included, are less healthy, get fewer chances to develop their self-esteem, and are at a higher risk of mental health issues. By providing these kids with the chance to play tennis together, they feel more included and are more healthy in many areas of their life.
