Healthy lifestyles are vital for development and growth among adolescents as it shapes their health and wellbeing as adults. A third of adolescents in the US are either obese or overweight, a number which has only increased over the years. Only 33% of students report eating 2 or more fruits a day and 14% report eating 3 or more vegetables a day. 18% of adolescents have been diagnosed with prediabetes and another 0.8% have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Eating disorders affect millions of adolescents in the US, with over half of teenage girls and a third of teenage boys using unhealthy weight loss behaviours such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking tobacco and vomiting. One-on-one health coaching with CAPSLO, which provides information on nutrition, fitness and stress relief, allows adolescents to improve their lifestyles and avoid facing severe health conditions in the future.
Health coaching provides the patient with the necessary knowledge and resources which are calibrated to their own health goals and body type, instead of receiving the generic ‘eat better, exercise more’ recommendation. Common chronic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes can be avoided through simple, positive and lasting lifestyle modifications. A half-century ago, type 2 diabetes was called adult-onset diabetes as it was hardly diagnosed in people under 60 years old. Yet nowadays, many children and adolescents are getting diagnosed with diabetes earlier than their grandparents.
