Millions of vulnerable people go hungry everyday in the UK while 250,000 tonnes of good, edible food goes to waste every year. This surplus food has the potential to provide over 650 million meals and eliminate food poverty in the UK. Providing vulnerable people with balanced and nutritious meals allows their diet to improve, their physical strength to improve and their energy levels to increase. FareShare delivers the surplus food to frontline charities and community groups such as homeless hostels, children breakfast clubs, elderly lunch clubs, domestic violence refugees and community cafés, feeding almost 1 million people each week.
Food is a human right and no one deserves to go to bed at night feeling hungry. Food poverty in the UK is increasing and is becoming a norm for 19% of British children who live in food insecure homes and are forced to steal food from school. The rates of hospital admissions due to malnutrition-related diseases and illnesses like rickets are at their highest for 50 years and evidence shows that childhood stunting, a condition that impairs growth and development due to poor nutrition, is rising.
Your impact donation is helping to achieve the below Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations.
We are part of a global movement that distributes surplus food to charities who then create meals for the homeless and the vulnerable. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry every year while 8.4 million people are struggling to afford to eat. In 2019, we distributed 20,838 tons of food, reached 1,960 towns and cities in the UK, helped 10,943 charities and community groups and provided 46.5 million meals to vulnerable people.
