Our Expert Guide will accompany you on a 4-day Day of the Dead cultural experience as you learn about, observe, and participate in a variety of local traditions which are sure to leave a lasting impact.

Hanál Pixán, or "Feast of the Spirits" in Mayan is an ancient harvest festival that predates today's Day of the Dead by centuries. These traditions are alive and well in Yucatán, where for a full week people prepare altars in honor of a visit from their departed ancestors, and make special foods for their enjoyment. The most famous of these foods – mucbilpollo – is a giant tamal filled with chicken and baked in an underground oven, or píib. Its “burial” and “resurrection” are symbolic of the deceased family members who they believe will return to earth during the festival.

In this special four-day workshop we will learn the traditional method for preparing the tamal, as well as other traditional treats of Yucatecan cuisine. We will also go on an excursion to Izamál and the fabulously colorful Maya cemetery in Hoctún. Here, we will have the unique opportunity to participate in a twilight mass - a true cultural experience.

Join us for a complete cultural immersion and discover the ins and outs of one of Mexico's most famous festivals!
